György Király
1982 - Painter

Biography

György Király's visual world deals with the theme of silence through still life motifs. Initially, his focus was on representational painting, which gradually abstracted, eventually leading to the image carrying an independent content by translating experiences into a constant abstract phenomenon. His use of materials includes oil painting, watercolour, charcoal drawing, and etching techniques.

From 2003, he majored in painting at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts under Dóra Maurer and later Gábor Nagy. In 2008, he received the diploma prize from the Hungarian Association of Fine Artists. In 2009, he was awarded a studio apartment at the Szolnok Artist Colony, where he had the opportunity for in-depth painting work.

In 2009, he received the Barcsay Award and exhibited at the Barcsay Museum in Szentendre. His graphic activities began in 2013 with the support of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship at the Nuremberg Academy, where he created a series of etchings. Since then, his etching work has been developed in parallel with his painting. He is a member of the Hungarian Graphic Artists' Association and received the Rékassy Award at the 65th Vásárhelyi Autumn Exhibition.

Starting in 2016, his series Különös Csendek (Mystical Silences) has been supported annually by the National Cultural Fund. The theme of silence is expressed in both small and large-scale oil paintings, often titled after specific individuals or phenomena. The initial Kék-csendek (Blue Silences) series has expanded over the years to include the Vörös (Red), Fekete (Black), and Fehér (White) series. These works were awarded at the Szeged Summer Exhibition in 2019, the Eger Watercolor Triennial in 2021, the Tatabánya Charcoal Triennial and the Pastel Triennial in 2023, and the Salgótarján Spring Exhibition in 2024. In 2024, as a scholar at the Hungarian Academy in Rome, he is working on the Római-csendek (Roman Silences) series.

In 2021, he had a solo exhibition at the János Damjanich Museum in Szolnok, accompanied by the publication of the Különös Csendek (Mystical Silence) book edited by art historian Ágnes Képiró. In 2022, he held solo exhibitions at the Újpest Gallery and the Martyn Ferenc Gallery in Pécs, followed by an exhibition titled Stille at the Vielshofen City Gallery in Germany. His works are part of the permanent collection at the Damjanich Museum and are also held in collections at the Herman Ottó Museum, the Tornyai János Museum, the Rómer Flóris Museum, and the Dobó István Museum.
